About Me

Hello! My name is Laura Kunze. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Geology and a certificate in GIS from Metropolitan State University of Denver. My journey in geology began in 2015 at Salem State University, where I completed a hypothetical dredging project in Salem Harbor, analyzing sonar data and creating isopach maps from field measurements. In 2017, I moved to Colorado to attend Colorado Mesa University, completing a geomorphological research project on groundwater sapping and its implications for evidence of water on Mars. Inspired by Colorado’s landscapes, I stayed to finish my geology degree at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where I discovered my passion for map design and GIS.

I have strong technical skills in ArcGIS Pro, spatial modeling, and cartographic practices along with experience in sonar and LiDAR data, XRF and XRD analysis, polarized light microscopy, thin section construction, and lithologic description and identification. I enjoy combining my geologic background with GIS to create maps that support a multitude of different projects.

Professionally, I have applied my skills in several GIS roles. I began as a Teacher’s Assistant for a GIS professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, supporting instruction, leading class discussions, grading assignments, and assisting students with ArcGIS Pro. After graduation, I worked as an Associate Geospatial Analyst for CACI International, mapping hydrologic, transportation, and utility networks, as well as cultural and geologic features, while maintaining metadata and implementing QA/QC standards for federal mapping projects. I then served as a GIS Analyst for Geographic Services Inc., where I analyzed administrative boundaries and performed quality control to ensure accurate geospatial products for additional federal projects. I currently hold the role of Cartographic Technician for the Bureau of Land Management, producing maps for the 100k Mapping Program that showcase public lands and support recreation.
